View From The Road: A Letter For Prospective Students

A lot of people ask me what lessons are like.   It’s one of the most common questions I get.  Maybe someone referred you to me, or maybe you’re just shopping driving schools.

I try to create a relaxed, fun environment, but I also strive to challenge students with complex driving conditions and situations – as they can handle it.  Expect conversation and expect the stereo on, windows down and top open (if the weather cooperates).  Why?  Because most people drive with those distractions daily, so why not learn to drive well despite them?

I’ll teach you precision control of the vehicle first, because without it nothing else is possible.  Once you have that, I’ll teach you to see the world in different ways – how to anticipate another driver’s moves, how to spot a pedestrian behind a parked van, how to hear danger before it gets to you.  I’ll teach you why the human brain hates physics and is openly working against you driving well, and how to train it to appreciate the world at 60 feet per second.

In general, we will start off on gentle, rural roads with light traffic, where you can comfortably learn precision control of the vehicle.  As your skills improve, the complexity of the driving tasks will increase.  If I do my job right, you’ll drive more challenging roads during your training than you ever do in real life.   We’ll drive cities in heavy traffic and dirt roads covered in potholes, and you’ll see more than your fair share of people driving badly.  You’ll get honked at, and that’s okay – it’s all part of the process.  You’ll make mistakes, and that’s okay too – that’s how we learn.  And don’t worry – in almost nine years, and thousands of driving sessions, no student of mine has ever caused a crash during a lesson.

I do this, not because it’s easy, but because the harder I train you, the more experiences you’ll get, and the safer a driver you’ll become.   And I don’t want to have to worry about you once you’re licensed and driving by yourself.   I want to know that I’ve done everything reasonably possible to prepare you for whatever you might encounter out there, and that you have learned to handle yourself.

Remember, it’s my job to keep you safe while you learn.  That’s why I’ll always use a Volvo (they’re pretty much the safest cars on Earth) and it’s why you’ll always see a cup of coffee in my hand (cause, caffeine, right?).

Don’t ask me about the test.  The test is stupid easy, so long as you learn everything I teach you, and practice what I teach you.  When you’re ready, I’ll tell you, and we’ll go do it.  I don’t care whether you pass the first time or the seventh – I won’t pressure you about that.  Sometimes nerves get in the way, I get it.  I don’t evaluate myself or my school based upon how many students pass the first time.  Instead, I evaluate myself on how many of my students go their first year as a licensed driver without a crash or a ticket.  To me, that’s a far better metric.

The nutshell: we’ll train hard, learn much and have some fun.  I don’t wake up every morning to train competent drivers, but to train great drivers.  That’s my passion.  If this sounds like the experience you’re looking for, then enroll today and let’s get started.
