The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires all private driving school instructors to undergo the following background checks prior to beginning work: PA Child Abuse Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Search, and FBI Fingerprint Criminal Record Search.
Michael Mercadante, the sole instructor and employee of Modern Driver Institute, underwent all three background checks for his initial hire at Driver Training Services in 2011, and again when he launched Modern Driver Institute in 2014.
The PA Department of Education does not require any further re-certification of continuously-working instructors after their initial checks, regardless of how long they may work in the field. Despite this, it is the policy of Modern Driver Institute to re-check all instructors every 3 years on PA Child Abuse Clearance and PA State Police Criminal Record Search (the FBI fingerprinting is only done at the initial time of hire). This policy is in conformity with most public school districts in the area and exceeds the Department of Education standard.
