NC Woman Dies Updating Facebook

A 32-year-old North Carolina woman, Courtney Ann Sanford, died in a car crash Thursday morning when her car drifted across the median and crashed head-on with an oncoming truck.

She wasn’t drunk or drowsy.  There was nothing wrong with her car.  She died because she was busy taking selfies and updating her Facebook status instead of paying attention to her driving.

“The Facebook text happened at 8:33 a.m. We got the call on the wreck at 8:34 a.m.,” explains Lt. Chris Weisner, with the High Point Police Department.  The update that was more important than the rest of her life?  “The happy song makes me HAPPY.”

At 50 MPH, your car is moving at about 75 feet per second.  So is the oncoming traffic.  Within just 4 seconds, the gap between your car and an oncoming truck has closed by 600 feet – that’s the length of two football fields.  In the same time it takes most people to recite their mailing address.

If you’re one of the millions of Americans who uses their smart phone while driving, remember Courtney Ann Sanford.  Her life is over because she took her attention off the road for just a few seconds – because Facebook was more important than safe driving.
